Layercake a place, its layers, its years

Put your research on a map that moves through time. Pick the place. Add the layers — climate, law, harvest, your own data. Set the years. Layercake draws them on one sheet and one time axis so they can be read against each other, and every figure keeps its source. Free, open, and the files stay yours.

Who it is for

Anyone whose question has a where, a what and a when: a PhD on irrigation law and olive yields, a report on heat and hospital admissions by region, a history of a river basin's dams. You do not need to code to see your first field; you need Node on a laptop to build the full plate — one command, printed for you.

The three questions

1 · Place

Where?

One country or several — the mask. The frame draws land, coast, relief and every river from open sources; no political line is drawn. The window is the mask's bounding box plus a margin.

2 · Data

What?

Layers of four shapes: a field (values on a grid — rain, heat), marks (values on places — regions, sites), events (dated instruments with a scope — laws, plans, dams), series (national figures — exports, prices). Readers exist for NASA POWER (worldwide) and Eurostat (EU); anything else comes in as CSV in the same shape.

3 · Years

When?

A start, an end, and a normal period for anomalies (WMO 1991–2020 by default). Every layer is read on that one axis, so a year is the same year on the sheet, in the margin and on the strip.
